Drones hit St Petersburg port as PUTIN hosts major economic forum

Wednesday, June 3, 2026- Ukrainian drones struck multiple targets in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, just as President Vladimir Putin was hosting the high-profile St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The attack hit key infrastructure including an oil terminal and port facilities, triggering large fires and thick smoke visible across parts of the city. The strikes came early in the morning and coincided almost directly with the opening of the forum, which is often used by the Kremlin to project economic strength and stability amid ongoing war conditions.

Russian authorities reported that several drones were intercepted, but multiple impacts still caused damage and disruptions, including temporary interruptions at Pulkovo Airport and heightened security across the city.

Ukrainian officials described the strikes as part of a broader campaign targeting Russia’s energy and military logistics infrastructure, aimed at weakening its war capacity far from the front lines. The targeted facilities included strategic fuel storage and port operations critical to Russia’s export network.

The timing of the attack carries strong symbolic weight, overshadowing a forum that brings together thousands of business leaders and international delegates. While the event continued under tight security, the visible smoke over the city underscored the growing reach of the conflict into Russia’s economic centers.

The development highlights a shifting reality: even major state-backed economic showcases are no longer insulated from the war’s direct impact, raising fresh concerns about security, stability, and the trajectory of the conflict.
