KEIR STARMER resigns as Prime Minister and leader of Labour Party

Monday, June 22, 2026- Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing a dramatic end to his leadership less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide election victory.

In an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he had accepted that he was no longer the right person to lead the party into the next general election and would step aside to allow a transition of leadership.

The resignation follows months of mounting pressure within Labour, declining public support, and disappointing election results that intensified calls for change. Starmer confirmed he will remain in office temporarily while the party conducts a leadership contest, with nominations expected to open in July.

Several senior Labour figures are being discussed as potential successors, with Andy Burnham widely viewed as the frontrunner to take over the party and potentially become the next prime minister.

The announcement marks another major turning point in British politics and opens a new chapter for Labour at a critical moment for the country.

With economic challenges, public service pressures, and growing political competition shaping the national debate, the choice of Starmer's successor will have significant implications for the government's future direction.

Attention now shifts to the leadership race, which is expected to dominate the political agenda in the coming weeks.
