Magnitude 6.1 earthquake jolts Cuba, strongest in 150 years

Tuesday, June 9, 2026- A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck near eastern Cuba, shaking buildings, triggering panic, and disrupting communications across several coastal communities.

The quake, which hit without warning, is being described by local authorities as one of the most powerful seismic events in the region in over a century, underscoring growing concern about preparedness in Caribbean fault zones.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to assess structural damage, particularly in older housing and infrastructure that is more vulnerable to seismic activity.

Residents reported strong shaking that lasted several seconds, with aftershocks continuing to rattle parts of the affected area. Officials are prioritizing search-and-assist operations while also inspecting roads, bridges, and hospitals for hidden damage.

Seismologists monitoring the event say the quake highlights the region’s exposure along complex tectonic boundaries, where even moderate-to-strong earthquakes can have outsized impacts due to building density and coastal geography.

While no major tsunami alert was issued, authorities are urging vigilance as aftershocks remain possible and full damage assessments are still underway.
