Jetstar introduces fees for carry-on luggage in overhead lockers

Tuesday, August 4, 2026 - Jetstar has announced a major change to its cabin baggage policy, introducing fees for passengers who want to store carry-on luggage in overhead lockers.

Beginning in February 2027, travelers will receive one free small bag that fits under the seat, while larger carry-on bags placed in overhead compartments will require the purchase of a new "Priority Carry-on" option. The new fee starts at A$25 for domestic flights and can reach A$52 on selected international routes.

The airline says the updated policy is designed to speed up boarding, reduce congestion around overhead bins, and eliminate routine gate weigh-ins for carry-on bags.

Passengers who pay for the new option will also receive priority boarding, while the previous 7kg cabin baggage limit will be replaced with a size-based system. Checked baggage allowances remain unchanged.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some travelers welcoming the streamlined boarding process while others criticize the move as another added travel expense.

As airlines continue to unbundle services to keep base fares low, Jetstar's latest policy reflects a growing trend among budget carriers to charge separately for overhead cabin space.
