Saturday, August 22, 2026 - Passengers on an AirAsia flight from Kota Kinabalu to Shanghai were left stunned after a female passenger reportedly defecated in her seat shortly before landing.
Flight AK1516 was approaching Shanghai Pudong International Airport on August 19 when a strong smell spread through the cabin, reportedly leaving passengers dealing with the unpleasant situation for about 40 minutes. Witnesses said the aircraft toilet was still available at the time.
AirAsia confirmed that its crew discovered a “hygiene abnormality” in the aisle during the landing preparation. Crew members, wearing gloves and using towels, carried out basic cleaning while prioritising the safe landing of the aircraft.
After passengers had disembarked, ground staff thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the affected area before the aircraft's return service.
The unusual incident has quickly attracted attention online, but AirAsia has focused its response on the crew's handling of the emergency rather than the passenger involved.
AirAsia China general manager Frank Tang praised the cabin crew for remaining calm and professional under difficult circumstances, stressing that passenger safety and wellbeing remained the airline's priority.
