Friday, September 24, 2026 - One person was killed and four others injured after a knife attack at a Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, southeastern Poland, on Thursday.
Police said a 31-year-old Ukrainian man attacked four men and a woman at the monastery grounds, with all five victims taken to hospital. One of the injured, identified by Polish media as a priest, later died. Authorities detained the suspect at the scene and secured the weapon.
The attack took place at around 9:30 a.m. at the 17th-century abbey, located about 30 kilometres from Poland’s border with Ukraine.
Prosecutors said the suspect allegedly took a knife from the monastery kitchen before attacking clergy members and worshippers. Two of the injured were initially reported to be in critical condition, while investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The motive remains unclear as Polish police and prosecutors continue their investigation. Authorities said the suspect had entered Poland from Germany and was reportedly travelling toward the Ukrainian border before going to the abbey.
The attack has prompted condolences from Polish and Ukrainian leaders, while the town of Jarosław has declared a period of mourning through the end of the week.
