Monday, September 28, 2026 - At least 10 Nepali climbers and support staff were reported missing after an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal’s Manang district on Sunday morning.
The 7,126-metre mountain, near the border with Tibet, had experienced heavy snowfall in recent days. Eight members of one expedition team and two people from another company were initially reported missing as the avalanche swept through the staging area.
Rescue efforts have been complicated by heavy snow and poor weather, with helicopters initially unable to reach the site. A team of experienced mountain guides has since been mobilised to search the area.
The missing Nepalese workers had been sent ahead of foreign climbers to prepare camps, manage routes and fix ropes before the main expeditions began. Three people initially reported missing have since made contact with their families and organisers, according to expedition officials.
The incident has heightened concerns over deteriorating conditions across Nepal’s mountain regions, where persistent rain and snowfall have already disrupted trekking and climbing activities.
Expeditions on nearby Mount Manaslu were forced to withdraw because of avalanche risks, while authorities have urged caution as severe weather continues. Rescue teams are now racing against the weather to locate everyone still unaccounted for and determine the full impact of the avalanche.
