Monday, September 21, 2026 - Wildlife experts have discovered an exceptionally rare two-headed turtle on Cape Cod, drawing attention from researchers and animal specialists.
The unusual eastern box turtle hatchling was found in the area and brought to the Wildlife Center of Cape Cod, where experts confirmed that it has two distinct heads sharing a single body. The condition, known as bicephaly, occurs when an embryo does not completely separate during development.
The tiny turtle has two functioning heads, each with its own brain and facial features, but the animals share the same body and internal organs.
Specialists say such abnormalities are extremely uncommon in wild turtles and can create significant challenges for movement, feeding and survival. The discovery provides researchers with a rare opportunity to observe and better understand how such developmental conditions affect wildlife.
