10 killed, including 6 of a family, in Bangladesh seaside resort fire

Saturday, October 17, 2026 - At least 10 people have died after a devastating fire tore through a seaside resort in Cox’s Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The blaze broke out at Tuptup Resto and Resort near Inani Beach at around 7 a.m. local time, rapidly engulfing the three-storey structure, which was built mainly from wood and bamboo. Among the victims were six members of the same family, including a five-year-old child. Several people were also injured, while emergency responders worked to control the fire and recover victims from the damaged building.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns about fire safety standards at tourist establishments in one of Bangladesh’s most popular holiday destinations. Officials said the resort was operating without a valid fire-safety licence despite receiving a warning following an inspection in June.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze, while reports indicate that some victims became trapped as the flames spread through the building. The resort manager was arrested in connection with the incident as police began investigating possible safety violations and accountability for the deaths.

The deadly incident has renewed calls for stricter safety inspections and stronger enforcement of fire regulations at hotels, resorts and other tourist facilities across Bangladesh. Investigators must establish how the fire started, whether essential safety equipment was available and why the reported violations were not resolved before the tragedy.

For the families who lost loved ones, the immediate priority is identifying victims, supporting survivors and securing answers. The disaster is a stark reminder that tourist facilities must meet basic safety requirements to protect lives, particularly when guests are asleep and have little time to escape.
