Thursday, October 1, 2026 - At least 10 miners are trapped underground after a tunnel collapsed at a gold mine in the Samti area of Chah Ab district in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province.
The collapse occurred while the workers were mining underground, with provincial authorities and rescue teams immediately sent to the site. Officials have yet to confirm the condition of the trapped miners or determine what caused the tunnel to give way.
Takhar Governor Samiullah Hizbullah and provincial police chief Musa Kalim Abul Nasr have travelled to the site to oversee the emergency response.
Rescue efforts are now focused on reaching the workers as quickly as possible, while authorities assess the collapsed tunnel and coordinate the operation.
The incident highlights the immediate risks facing miners in Afghanistan, where smaller mining operations can involve hazardous underground conditions and limited safety infrastructure.
For now, the priority remains locating and bringing the 10 trapped workers to safety as rescue crews work through the collapsed mine.
