Ethiopia fighting escalates in Tigray killing 52 civilians, medic tells the BBC

Thursday, October 1, 2026 - Fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region has intensified, with at least 52 civilians reportedly killed during three days of clashes around Alamata, according to hospital sources cited by the BBC.

A doctor at Alamata General Hospital said heavy explosives and artillery struck residential areas, with 12 people reportedly killed in a single attack on a marketplace.

The conflict is also disrupting basic services. Banking operations have been suspended in Tigray, while internet and telephone connections remain cut in parts of the region.

Médecins Sans Frontières has reported more than 700 wounded people admitted to hospitals it supports in Tigray in recent days, highlighting the growing pressure on medical facilities.

The latest violence is spreading concern beyond Tigray, with fighting also reported in parts of Amhara and Afar. Commercial flights to Lalibela have been disrupted, while regional tensions have raised fears of a wider conflict.

The immediate priority remains protecting civilians, restoring humanitarian access and preventing further escalation as conflicting accounts from the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan authorities make the situation difficult to verify independently.
