Israeli strike kills imam while preparing Quran education report in Gaza

Thursday, October 1, 2026 - A Palestinian imam and religious radio presenter, Mohammed Abdul Aziz al-Najjar, 38, was killed Wednesday in an Israeli drone strike in the southern Gaza Strip while reportedly preparing media material about Quran memorisation.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, al-Najjar was working on a report when he was struck in the Al-Mawasi area of Al-Qarara, northwest of Khan Younis.

Al-Najjar worked as a producer and presenter for Quran Radio and also served as imam of the Ibad al-Rahman Mosque in Khuza’a, east of Khan Younis.

A medical source said his body and another person who suffered moderate injuries were taken to Nasser Medical Complex following the strike. The Ministry of Endowments mourned his death and described his religious and media work as dedicated.

His killing came amid renewed Israeli strikes across Gaza that Palestinian officials and medical sources said killed several other people on Wednesday.

The latest violence is being reported despite a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025, with Gaza health officials saying more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the truce began. The continuing attacks are keeping civilian safety and humanitarian conditions at the centre of concern in the territory.
