OLIVIA DEAN faces copyright lawsuit over alleged similarities to BILL WITHERS' classic

Sunday, October 4, 2026 - Olivia Dean’s song “I’ve Seen It” is at the center of a new copyright lawsuit alleging similarities to Bill Withers’ classic “Just the Two of Us.”

Mattie Music Group, which represents rights to Withers’ catalog, filed the case in a California federal court on October 1, claiming Dean’s track copied significant elements of the 1981 hit, particularly its distinctive melody.

The lawsuit does not name Dean or her co-writers Bastian Langebæk and Max Wolfgang as defendants. Instead, it targets Capitol Records, Universal Music Group, Sony Publishing and Kobalt Music Publishing.

The complaint says a musicologist found substantial similarities between the two songs and alleges the defendants continued distributing and licensing “I’ve Seen It” after receiving a warning in August.

The case arrives as Dean’s profile is surging after a major 2026 breakthrough, including winning the Grammy for Best New Artist and achieving major chart success.

Mattie Music Group is seeking damages and an injunction against further alleged infringement, but the accusations remain unproven and no court has determined that Dean’s song infringes Withers’ copyright.
