Friday, May 2, 2025 - A 69-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of British mother-of-four Karen Carter, 65, in southwestern France.
Karen was discovered on Tuesday evening, April 29, outside a
home she owned and rented out in the quiet village of Trémolat, east of
Bordeaux. She had suffered five stab wounds to her breast, groin, arm, and leg
— injuries described by prosecutors as signs of "ferocious violence and a
clear intent to kill."
Sylvie Martins-Guedes, the public prosecutor for Bergerac,
confirmed the suspect is a local woman known to the victim. "She is part
of the couple’s circle," the prosecutor said, referring to Karen and her
husband Alan Carter.
Karen’s body was found near her car by a friend who had spent
the evening with her. The couple had owned the property for around 15 years.
Alan, who was not in France at the time, learned of his wife’s death from a
phone call with his cousin in the UK.
The victim was well-known in the area. Residents of Trémolat,
a picturesque Dordogne commune popular with British expats, were left stunned.
"Everyone is in total
shock," said a local resident. "Karen was a delightful, energetic
person who got on with everybody. Nobody can understand how something like this
could happen in such a peaceful place. We’re all locking our doors — it’s
deeply unsettling."
Karen has been described in local media as an active and
well-liked member of the community. The property where she was found, Les
Chouettes, was regularly rented out to tourists.
