UN releases $10M in emergency funding for Somalia amid hunger crisis

Tuesday, June 16, 2026- The United Nations has released $10 million in emergency funding to support life-saving humanitarian operations in Somalia as the country faces a worsening hunger crisis driven by drought, conflict, and economic hardship.

Humanitarian agencies warn that millions of people are struggling to access sufficient food, clean water, and essential health services, placing vulnerable communities at increasing risk of malnutrition and displacement.

The emergency allocation is expected to strengthen food assistance programs, nutrition services, water supply projects, and emergency healthcare interventions in some of the hardest-hit regions.

Aid organizations say the funding arrives at a critical moment as humanitarian needs continue to outpace available resources. With climate-related shocks and insecurity disrupting livelihoods across the country, relief agencies are urging the international community to increase support before conditions deteriorate further.

The latest funding package highlights the urgency of addressing Somalia’s humanitarian challenges while supporting long-term resilience efforts.

Aid officials stress that emergency assistance alone will not solve the crisis, emphasizing the need for sustained investment in food security, climate adaptation, and economic recovery.

As humanitarian operations expand, the focus remains on preventing a deeper catastrophe and protecting millions of people from the threat of severe hunger.
