Sunday, August 23, 2026 - Malaysian rock drummer Raja Azreen Raja Talib, 56, has died after collapsing during a festival performance, leaving his bandmates and fans stunned.
Azreen was performing with the rock group Meditasi at the Teruntum Rock Festival in Kuantan, Pahang, on July 18 when he suddenly slumped over his drum kit during the second song of the band's planned 10-song set. He was rushed to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital but did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead later that night.
The sudden collapse shocked the band because Azreen had appeared well during rehearsals in the days leading up to the concert. His brother, Raja Azman Raja Taib, said the drummer had recently been hospitalized twice for heart problems and had also recently been diagnosed with diabetes.
He suggested that extreme fatigue may have placed additional strain on his heart, noting that Azreen had taken part in a BMX competition before heading to the festival. Reports have cited heart complications as the likely cause of death.
Meditasi frontman Bakaruddin “Burn” Daud said the loss was especially devastating because the band had spent decades together and Azreen remained passionate about both music and cycling.
The group, which reunited in 2015 after earlier success in Malaysia's rock scene, has not finalized its long-term plans but intends to continue performing in his memory. For fans, Azreen's final performance has become a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary night of live music can turn into an unimaginable farewell.
