Monday, September 21, 2026 - Violence surged across the occupied West Bank on Sunday as an Israeli settler was shot dead near Neve Tzuf, north of Ramallah, while Israeli forces separately killed a Palestinian man they said had attempted to ram soldiers near Ganim, close to Jenin.
The Israeli victim, identified as Netanel Shukrun, died in hospital after being critically wounded in the shooting. Israeli authorities later detained a Palestinian man suspected of carrying out the attack.
The second incident happened farther north, where the Israeli military said soldiers opened fire after a Palestinian driver attempted to strike them with a vehicle. Palestinian health authorities identified the man as Sami Zwaideh, 32.
It remained unclear whether the two deadly incidents were connected, and the military’s account of the alleged attempted ramming could not immediately be independently verified.
The shootings came as security forces increased deployments and checkpoints across parts of the West Bank ahead of Yom Kippur.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered additional security measures following the violence, while the developments have intensified concerns over further escalation in an already volatile territory. With tensions high, authorities are facing pressure to prevent new attacks and contain the risk of retaliatory violence.
