Monday, September 21, 2026 - Pakistan authorities have arrested Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in Lahore as political tensions rise ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest march on September 27.
Lahore’s district administration ordered her detention for 30 days under the province’s Maintenance of Public Order law, citing public-safety concerns. Reuters reported that the arrest took place at her residence.
The development has quickly widened the political spotlight around the upcoming demonstration. PTI says the march is intended to demand Imran Khan’s release, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said the government will take measures to prevent the protest.
The arrest has also drawn strong criticism from Khan’s party, which disputes the government’s justification and has called for her release.
The situation intensified further on Monday, with Pakistani outlet Dawn reporting that Imran Khan’s sisters Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were also detained for 30 days under the same public-order law.
With the September 27 protest approaching, the arrests put renewed focus on security measures, political tensions and the authorities’ handling of PTI supporters.
