Friday, October 2, 2026 - A major fire has gutted the historic Miller Mansion in central St. Petersburg, with flames spreading across about 2,000 square metres of the landmark near St. Isaac’s Cathedral.
The blaze broke out on the evening of October 1 and was brought under control early Friday, with emergency crews reporting no casualties. The building was not in use when the fire started.
Russian investigators have opened a criminal case over alleged violations of safety rules during construction work. Preliminary findings indicate that welding carried out during the mansion’s restoration may have sparked the fire.
The flames spread rapidly through the building, damaging its interior and reaching the roof structure of an adjoining building.
The Miller Mansion is a protected cultural heritage site and has been undergoing preparations for restoration and conversion into residential property.
A 768-million-ruble financing agreement was secured earlier this year for the project, which was expected to be completed in 2027. The fire now raises urgent questions about the scale of the damage and whether the historic structure can be fully restored.
