Sunday, October 4, 2026 - Lithuania temporarily closed the airspace around Vilnius Airport on Saturday after an unidentified flying object, believed at the time to be a possible drone, was detected approaching from the direction of Belarus.
NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets were scrambled as authorities responded to the potential threat, forcing a temporary disruption at one of Lithuania’s key transport hubs.
The alert lasted less than an hour, and authorities later lifted the airspace restrictions after no confirmed threat was established.
Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre said the object was not fully identified, while officials continued investigating what triggered the alert.
The incident highlights the growing pressure on airspace security across NATO’s eastern flank, where unidentified objects and suspected drones have repeatedly triggered rapid military responses.
With Vilnius close to Belarus and regional tensions remaining high, even an unconfirmed sighting can quickly affect civilian aviation and force authorities to act before the nature of the threat is clear.
