Wednesday, October 7, 2026 - Michael Douglas has revealed a long-kept secret from the set of Basic Instinct, and it was not the romance many fans suspected.
In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old actor says he had a secret affair with co-star Jeanne Tripplehorn while filming the 1992 thriller. Douglas was still married to Diandra Luker at the time, although he says they had formally separated and were living separate lives.
The revelation is particularly striking because attention surrounding the movie had long focused on Douglas and Sharon Stone, whose intense on-screen chemistry fueled speculation about a relationship off camera.
Douglas says the rumors missed what was actually happening, as he and Tripplehorn deliberately kept their relationship hidden from the cast and crew. He writes that he fell deeply for Tripplehorn and was even prepared to leave his marriage for her, but ultimately decided not to immediately enter another serious relationship.
Douglas says the relationship lasted throughout production before the two eventually went their separate ways. He recently contacted Tripplehorn to ask permission to include the story in his memoir, and she agreed.
The confession adds another explosive layer to one of Hollywood's most talked-about films, especially as Douglas' memoir continues to reveal previously private details about his relationships and career. More than three decades after Basic Instinct arrived in cinemas, one of its biggest behind-the-scenes secrets is finally out.
