Turkey seizes Iran’s Caspian Airlines jet over $3.4M debt

Thursday, October 1, 2026 - Turkish authorities have seized a Boeing 737 belonging to Iran’s Caspian Airlines at Istanbul Airport over an alleged unpaid debt of about €3 million, equivalent to $3.4 million.

The aircraft had completed boarding for a flight to Iran when lawyers representing the creditor and enforcement officers arrived with a court-ordered seizure decision. Passengers and cabin crew were removed from the plane before it was grounded.

The debt is reportedly linked to services provided at Istanbul Airport, with Turkish aviation company ACM Temsil Gözetim identified as the creditor.

Caspian Airlines described the situation as a temporary operational restriction involving one of its Boeing aircraft because of an administrative issue in Türkiye. The airline said measures were being taken to resolve the matter and maintain its flight operations.

The seizure comes as Iranian airlines face growing pressure from international sanctions and restrictions on their overseas operations. Türkiye has continued to allow Iranian carriers to operate despite the latest U.S. sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector, making Istanbul an important international destination for Iranian airlines.

The latest incident adds another financial and operational challenge for carriers already struggling to maintain international routes.
