Friday, April 24, 2026-The United States has sharply criticized China for what it describes as mounting pressure on African nations to block a planned trip by Taiwan’s president.
U.S. officials say Beijing is leveraging diplomatic and economic influence to isolate Taiwan internationally, warning that such actions undermine the sovereignty of African countries and limit their ability to make independent foreign policy decisions.
According to U.S. officials, several African governments have faced direct and indirect pressure to deny transit, meetings, or official recognition during the proposed visit.
Washington argues that these tactics are part of a broader strategy by China to restrict Taiwan’s global engagement and reduce its diplomatic footprint, particularly in regions where Beijing has deep economic ties and infrastructure investments.
China, however, maintains that its actions are consistent with its “One China” policy, which views Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any official exchanges between Taiwan and other countries.
The situation has intensified geopolitical tensions, placing African nations in a delicate position as they navigate relationships with both China and Western partners while balancing economic interests and diplomatic autonomy.
