Deaths reported after Washington State paper mill chemical tank rupture

Wednesday, May 27, 2026-A deadly industrial disaster has struck Longview, Washington, where a chemical tank rupture at a major paper mill has left at least one confirmed dead and multiple others injured, with officials warning the toll could still rise.

The incident occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility when a large tank containing hazardous “white liquor” suddenly failed during operations, releasing a highly corrosive chemical mixture used in paper production.

Emergency crews have been battling unstable conditions at the site, where several workers remain unaccounted for as rescue operations shift toward recovery.

Authorities report that the chemical spill created dangerous working conditions, with sections of the plant still under strict safety controls due to the risk of further leakage or structural collapse.

Investigators are now working to determine what triggered the rupture, with early assessments focusing on tank integrity, maintenance standards, and operational pressure at the time of failure.

State and federal agencies have launched formal inquiries as the community grapples with one of the most severe industrial accidents in recent years, raising renewed concerns about chemical safety in aging industrial facilities.
