Monday, June 29, 2026 - A 23-year-old pregnant Indian woman allegedly d!ed by suicide after being subjected to humiliation by her husband, who reportedly demanded a DNA test for her unborn child.
The incident led to the arrest of the man and his mother in
Hyderabad on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The victim, G Sushmita, was found hanging at her residence
in Gadipeddapur village of Alladurg mandal in Medak district on the evening of
June 25.
“We arrested her husband G Abhilash and his mother Laxmi.
They were produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial remand,” said
Alladurg sub-inspector D Shankar.
The victim, Sushmita was five months pregnant at the time of
her d3ath.
In a complaint lodged with police, her mother G Janabai
alleged that her daughter had been subjected to sustained physical and mental
harassment by her husband, with the demand for a DNA test intensifying the
distress.
A native of Mothkupally village in Vikarabad district,
Sushmita had been married to Abhilash, a bangle seller from Gadipeddapur, for
about 18 months.
"On June 23, my husband and I visited Sushmita’s house
to discuss arrangements for the baby shower ceremony. While we were there,
Abhilash had an argument about the ceremony and demanded a DNA test for the
unborn child. Subsequently, elders from the community intervened and we
returned home,” Janabai alleged in her police complaint.
According to the complaint, the demand—raised in the
presence of both families—caused severe humiliation and emotional trauma to
Sushmita.
Family members alleged that the suspicion cast on her
character deeply affected her mental state.
Two days later, on June 25 evening, Sushmita d!ed by suicide
at her house.
Villagers informed her parents of the incident.
Janabai further alleged that continuous harassment by her
husband and mother-in-law drove her daughter to take the extreme step.
According the complaint, Alladurg police registered a case
on June 26 under sections 85 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to
cruelty) and 108 (abetment of su!cide), read with section 3(5) (common
intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Following a post-mortem, the body was handed over to
Sushmita’s parents.
