TRUMP says Iran requested Doha meeting as Tehran denies direct US talks

Monday, June 29, 2026- Fresh uncertainty has emerged over U.S.-Iran diplomacy after President Donald Trump claimed that Iran requested a meeting in Doha to discuss easing tensions.

Trump said senior American officials would travel to Qatar for the talks, describing them as a potential step toward maintaining a fragile ceasefire and advancing broader negotiations.

Tehran quickly pushed back against the claim, with Iranian officials insisting that no direct negotiations with the United States are scheduled.

Instead, Iran says any discussions will continue through mediators, rejecting reports that face-to-face talks have been arranged. The conflicting statements highlight the deep mistrust that continues to define relations between the two countries despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The mixed messages have added fresh uncertainty to an already volatile situation in the Middle East, where recent military confrontations and concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have kept global markets on edge.

While both sides appear interested in preventing further escalation, it remains unclear whether diplomacy can move forward without agreement on the format of future negotiations.
